CARVER COUNTY GOP SHERIFF CANDIDATE FORUM

Carver County GOP Sheriff Forum

I had the honor of participating in the Carver County GOP Sheriff's Candidate Forum this week. Thank you to the Carver County GOP for hosting the event and to everyone who attended. It was a privilege to meet the other candidates and discuss the future of public safety in Carver County.

One thing became clear during the discussion: there is broad agreement that the Carver County Sheriff's Office faces important challenges that must be addressed. Issues such as recruitment and retention, staffing, employee morale, and communication are critical to building a Sheriff's Office that is prepared for the future.

My campaign is not about criticizing the past. It is about providing the experienced leadership needed to move the Sheriff's Office forward.

With nearly four decades in law enforcement, executive command experience in Minnesota's largest Sheriff's Office, and graduation from the FBI National Academy, I have led large organizations, managed multi-million-dollar budgets, and built strong teams. I won't be learning on the job—I will be ready to lead on Day One.

On August 11, I respectfully ask for your vote. Together, we can build a stronger Sheriff's Office and ensure Carver County remains one of the safest places to live, work, and raise a family.

Leadership. Experience. Results.

LAW ENFORCEMENT LEADERSHIP - NEARLY 40 YEARS

Leadership Matters!

The Carver County Sheriff's Office is more than a law enforcement agency. It is a complex organization responsible for protecting our communities, managing millions of taxpayer dollars, leading dedicated employees, operating the jail, coordinating emergency response, and building partnerships with our cities and residents.

Leading an organization like this requires more than good intentions—it requires proven leadership experience.

A Sheriff must be prepared to make difficult decisions, inspire employees, solve complex problems, and earn the trust of the public from the very first day in office.

That is why I am running for Sheriff.

With nearly 40 years of law enforcement experience, executive command leadership in Minnesota's largest Sheriff's Office, and graduation from the FBI National Academy, I have spent my career leading people, managing large organizations, and delivering results.

I won't be learning on the job. I'll be ready to lead on Day One.

On August 11, I respectfully ask for your vote so that together we can build a Sheriff's Office focused on leadership, accountability, communication, and preparing Carver County for the future.

Leadership Matters. Experience Matters. The Future Matters.

Vote Darrell Huggett for Carver County Sheriff.

WHAT MAKES A GOOD SHERIFF

What Makes a Good Sheriff?

A good sheriff is much more than an experienced law enforcement officer. The sheriff is the chief executive of a complex public safety organization responsible for leading people, managing budgets, working with elected officials, and earning the public's trust. The best sheriffs possess the following qualities:

1. Proven Leadership

A sheriff leads hundreds of employees, not just patrol deputies. They must inspire people, build strong teams, make difficult decisions, and be accountable.

2. Integrity

Integrity is the foundation of public trust. A sheriff must be honest, transparent, ethical, and willing to take responsibility when things go wrong.

3. Communication

Great sheriffs communicate openly with:

  • Employees
  • City and county leaders
  • Community members
  • The media

Strong communication builds trust and prevents problems from growing.

4. Recruitment and Retention

Public safety starts with great people. A successful sheriff creates a workplace where talented deputies and detention officers want to join—and stay.

5. Operational Experience

The sheriff oversees patrol, investigations, jail operations, emergency management, civil process, court security, and many specialized services. Understanding how these systems work together is essential.

6. Fiscal Responsibility

Sheriffs manage millions of taxpayer dollars. They must balance budgets, prioritize spending, and deliver excellent public safety while being responsible stewards of public funds.

7. Community Partnerships

The best sheriffs build strong relationships with:

  • Police chiefs
  • Fire departments
  • EMS
  • Schools
  • County departments
  • Community organizations
  • Business leaders

Public safety is strongest when agencies work together.

8. Decisiveness

Emergencies don't allow time for hesitation. A sheriff must remain calm under pressure, make sound decisions quickly, and accept responsibility for those decisions.

9. Vision

A sheriff should prepare the office for tomorrow's challenges by improving technology, strengthening recruitment, investing in training, and planning for future community needs.

10. Accessibility

Leadership means showing up. Employees, city officials, and residents should know their sheriff is visible, approachable, and willing to listen.

Leadership Matters. Experience Matters. The Future Matters.

Vote Darrell Huggett for Carver County Sheriff.

250th Birthday!

Tomorrow is one of my favorite days of the year—the Chanhassen Fourth of July Parade!

This year is especially meaningful as we celebrate America's 250th Independence Day. For two and a half centuries, our nation has been built on the enduring principles of freedom, liberty, and the belief that we all have a responsibility to serve something greater than ourselves. It's an opportunity to reflect on the sacrifices that have protected those freedoms and to celebrate the communities that make our country strong.

As someone who has dedicated a career to public service, the Fourth of July is a reminder of the privilege and responsibility of serving others. Protecting our communities, supporting our neighbors, and preserving the values that unite us are commitments I have carried throughout my career and will continue to uphold.

Beverly and I are looking forward to seeing everyone along the parade route tomorrow. Please stop by, say hello, and introduce yourself—we'd love the opportunity to meet you, answer your questions, and hear what's important to you and your family.

Thank you to all of the volunteers who will be walking with us and helping make the day a success. Your support means so much.

We hope to see you tomorrow at the Chanhassen Fourth of July Parade!

Have a safe and happy Independence Day. God bless Carver County, and God bless the United States of America!

A sincere thank you to the Carver County Fire Chiefs Association for hosting the sheriff candidates last night at the impressive new Chaska Public Safety Building.

I appreciated the opportunity to meet with the fire service leaders who work every day to protect our communities and to discuss the future of public safety in Carver County. Strong partnerships between the Sheriff's Office, fire departments, EMS, and our local police agencies are essential to keeping our residents safe.

I was honored to share my vision for the Sheriff's Office and discuss how my 38 years of law enforcement experience and executive command leadership have prepared me to strengthen collaboration, improve communication, and support our first responders from Day One.

Thank you to all of the Fire Chiefs for your thoughtful questions, your professionalism, and your commitment to serving the people of Carver County. I look forward to continuing to build these important partnerships.
